@feministdesignerAs a trigger ban state, abortion became criminalized in Arkansas with the SCOTUS Dobbs decision. And yet—Arkansas has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the country, the highest teen pregnancy rate in country, and ranks 49th in the country for the health of women and children. Abortion is a human right that plays a vital role in healthcare, community care, and reproductive justice for people with uteruses across the gender spectrum.

Ali Place (she/they) is a designer, educator and writer in Arkansas whose work explores the intersection of design and feminist theory as a space for critical making and radical speculation. She is the author of Feminist Designer: On the Personal and the Political in Design (MIT Press 2023), which illuminates design as a feminist practice through essays, case studies and dialogues. She is currently an associate professor of graphic design at the University of Arkansas.

Abortion has always existed and will continue to exist. It is pivotal healthcare that should be openly supported—people should always be able to get an abortion when they need it and when they’re ready. My design seeks to destigmatize abortion. Theactivist buttons or stickers in the design were inspired by visual activist culture that arose from the 70s feminist movements. &#38;nbsp;

Noopur Agarwal (she/her) is a designer and educator in San Francisco, California. Noopur maintains an active consultancy practice in addition to teaching where her client list has included nonprofit, publishing, and technology organizations. Her workhas amplified conversations around nuclear disarmament, climate change, and worldwide disparities in sanitation. In all of these endeavors, she draws upon her own biography as an Indian-American woman exploring themes of identity and privilege.

This design highlights the disproportionate risks Black women face during childbirth. This stems from the harmful stereotype that Black women can endure more pain, leading to their concerns being dismissed. The color patches symbolize all women, in accessing adequate pregnancy care. Including everyone underscores the belief that regardless of gender, pronouns, or identity, those capable of bearing children deserve equitable and accessible support.

Loosing federal support for Roe v. Wade was devastating. Georgia is already an at-risk state with poor statewide access to prenatal care and reproductive services. Our ability to choose how we handle our own reproductive organs are at risk. This work is a public service announcement to America to GTFO of our bodies, uterus, our futures, and our ability to decide what is best for us. Lives are at risk and there is already so much blood on America's hands.

In Idaho, abortion is banned, with the only exception being in reported cases of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother. Healthcare providers fear prosecution if they perform an abortion in Idaho, the sentence being two to five years in prison. These restrictions have led to a mass exodus of obstetricians and gynecologists from Idaho, decreasing our already exceptionally low physicians per capita ratio. This design responds to this healthcare crisis happening in Idaho.

Maryland has very few restrictions on abortion access and is considered a Very Protective state. However, many other states have restricted and criminalized abortion since the SCOTUS Dobbs decision. As Maya Angelou said, “… no one of us can be free until everybody is free.” Full access to reproductive health and abortion rights for all communities are essential to our freedom.

Michal Rotberg (she/her) is a designer and educator who works with college students from diverse international communities. In her professional practice, Michal explores the relationship between cognitive bias and culture. Her latest research, “Unleashing the Future,” investigates the relationship between the individual and generative AI through fictional scenarios and speculative design methodologies.

The need for access to safe and legal abortions expands beyond those who are cis-gendered women. There are many people who have the ability to become pregnant who do not identify as such, and the reality of having to carry a pregnancy full-termcan be harmful and/or life-threatening. I wanted this design to speak to a broader audience and hopefully remind people that restricted abortion access affects far more people than what meets the eye.

Lane Kendall (He/Him) is a creative based in Kansas City, MO. As someone who subscribes to art as a creative mode for self-expression, Lane demonstrates how design allows him to productively exercise his creativity. Lane also works withphotography and printmaking, creating art that primarily focuses on personal identity and societal constructs.

While New York is often seen as a progressive beacon, the fight for love, choice, and bodily autonomy must continue. The inclusion of New York's state flower, the rose, symbolizes growth, care, and empowerment.
